But it is also about organising our societies so that we can limit the extent and duration of bullying.

An Education for Sustainable Development event was organised by Comhar SDC and the Regional Centre for Expertise on Thursday 26th November 2009 in the Coach House, Dublin Castle. The first session of the day focused on the Stakeholder Vision for Education for Sustainable Development. We received great feedback for the Stakeholder Vision and have drafted up additional points on the National Strategy and Education for Sustainable Development in Ireland. The second session explored the role of the media through a lively and informative debate. The proceedings are available here.

Comhar Sustainable Development Council (SDC) is inviting proposals to undertake the development of a web display for information on Sustainable Development Indicators. This display can be a stand alone website or can be the development of our existing site (www.comharsdc.ie) to enable more graphic and text features. The main function of this development is education and awareness raising and it is part of a programme of work on indicators.

Tenders should be submitted electronically to niamh.kirwan(at)environ.ie and copied to comhar(at)environ.ie with "Confidential Tender for the Design of Web Resource" in the email subject line. Hard copies will be accepted if accompanied by an electronic version. Submissions should be received by 5pm Friday 19th February. Proposals received after this time will not be evaluated. A decision on the award of the contract will be made Wednesday 3rd March.

In his commentary, Professor Convery points out that, despite sharing the same space and some common historical traits, the Dominican Republic has a much better economy and environment than Haiti and is much better developed on a number of fronts.

The EU 2020 Strategy aims to put in place a policy framework for “a new sustainable social market economy, a smarter, greener economy, where our prosperity will come from innovation and from using resources better, and where the key input will be knowledge”.  While this overall objective is welcome, Comhar SDC believes that the “EU 2020” Strategy must be compatible with principles of sustainable development.  This is essential if economic recovery is not to undermine the long term ecological resilience and social cohesion in Europe.
